Concerned About A North Korean Attack? Practical Supplies Every Family Should Consider
Posted on: 23 October 2017
With current news headlines filled with the latest threats from North Korea, preparing for an actual attack is once again on the minds of a growing number of Americans. Like the Cold War era of the past, even the federal government is providing information to assist people with preparing their homes and families for a potential nuclear event. If you are concerned about your family's safety in the event of a nuclear attack or other terrorist act or natural disaster, taking the following steps is an excellent place to begin.
Develop a family emergency plan
Should a nuclear or other event actually occur, confusion and hysteria will be rampant among those immediately affected. This is why it is critically important for families to create a viable emergency plan and spend time making sure that all family members understand what to do and where to go in an emergency situation.
To do this effectively, families must choose a base location that all family members know about and can easily travel to. Families with young children may want to assign an older sibling or a parent to be responsible for younger children, to reduce confusion and make sure that even very young children are cared for during emergency conditions.
Plan ahead for emergency provisions and care needs
Experts know that terror events and natural disasters interrupt supply chains and create real problems in accessing basic needs, such as food and potable water, as well as medical supplies to take care of daily health needs and provide trauma care for injuries.
A good way for families to handle these needs effectively during any type of emergency or event is to make sure their home or base location is well-stocked with food, water, and supplies, including trauma medical packs, and basic health and hygiene needs. In addition to supplying the home or base location, families should also consider carrying a travel kit of food, water, and basic trauma care supplies in their vehicles or keeping one with them at work, in case an emergency occurs when away from home.
Supplies to include are:
- enough stored water to provide safe hydration at the rate of at least one gallon per day per person
- shelf-stable food supplies that provide sufficient calories and nutrition without being difficult to store, prepare, or carry
- hygiene supplies for daily use, as well as for use in the event of radiation exposure
- bedding, clothing, and basic medical and trauma supplies
- extra medications and supplies for those with ongoing medical needs, infants, and the elderly or disabled
While avoiding these types of events is certainly optimal, families who understand the risks and plan ahead for basic survival needs will have an advantage, should the current concerns about North Korea prove to be true.
